Perfectly parallel cuts!
#5 Zipper Overlay Templates
#5 Zipper Overlays make cutting perfectly parallel zipper "windows" much easier and more precise using a 45mm rotary cutter. No more jagged edges on your zipper overlays--use a rotary cutter to get perfectly straight, perfectly parallel cuts for your zipper windows!
Each zipper overlay is marked with the length of the zipper window that will be cut. The windows are 1/2" tall by the width shown on the Zipper Overlay Template (6.5 in. as seen below) and are intended for use with #5 zippers. We will make zipper overlay templates for #3 zippers as well if you'd like--just contact us and tell us what size you would like.
The overall size of the zipper overlays are 2" wide x 1 1/2" longer than the zipper window. For example, the 6.5" zipper overlay is 8" x 2" so you have a perfect 3/4" outline around the zipper window.

Using the Zipper Overlay Templates
It is ideal to use the Zipper Overlay Templates on a rotating rotary cutting mat, or use a small mat that you can easily move as needed.
- Place the material you are cutting right side down on your rotary cutting mat. (This allows you to make markings on the back of the material.)
- If you want rounded corners for your zipper overlay, use your favorite marking pen to trace the rounded corners. If you prefer rectangles then skip to the next step.
- Use a 45mm rotary blade to cut the straight edges of the top, bottom and sides of the zipper overlay. This is where the rotating cutting mat or small cutting mat comes in handy.
- If you want your zipper overlay to be rectangular, then be sure to cut beyond the edges of the zipper overlay template so that your cuts will meet and create sharp corners.
- Alternately, you can use your rotary cutter and a ruler to cut a rectangle that is 2 in. x 1.5 in longer than your zipper window (if your zipper window is 7 inches then you would cut a rectangle 8.5 in. by 2 in.)
- If you want your zipper overlay to be rectangular, then be sure to cut beyond the edges of the zipper overlay template so that your cuts will meet and create sharp corners.
- Next, use your rotary cutter to cut the long slots for the zipper window. Notice that the slots extend slightly beyond the zipper window rectangle--this is to allow for the curve in your 45mm rotary blade. Note: a 28 mm blade will cut too far and will leave notches in your overlay window! You can use a 60mm blade but it will come up short at the corners and you will need to use scissors to trim the corners.
- Finally, cut the small slots on each size of the zipper window. (Your rotary blade won't move much--it's mostly a straight down cut and may leave a small thread or two that need to be snipped at the end.)
